Position Overview
The Sr. Systems Engineer will be a senior member of the Service Line Delivery team and will represent the Infrastructure Services team (the technical review/design service delivery) for pre-defined technology stacks (DBA, UNIX/Windows, Data Center/Hosting Services, Network, and Storage infrastructure services)
The Sr. Systems Engineer is a high level Systems Administrator who works in concert with the Architect, Development Team and Service Lines to coordinate the design and delivery of the system architecture. The Infrastructure Lead is accountable for verifying the Project Build Sheet and is responsible for ensuring final delivery meets the requirements of the Project Architecture Document.
Key Responsibilities:
• Work with the business partners, Solutions Architecture Team and Service Management team to provide input into project estimate exercises and accountable for infrastructure design (Build Sheet) input to the Project Architecture Diagram – starting from the initial requirements meeting and discussions.
• Act as the Infrastructure Lead in approved projects, providing technical knowledge, guidelines, hands-on creation of technical solutions and technical leadership
• Ensure alignment and coordination of initial requirements meetings/ planning with the Service Lines regarding infrastructure services from a delivery perspective
• Facilitate resourcing estimates with Service Delivery Lines for project deliverables
• Participate in functional review with Solutions Architecture team and Business Partners
• Facilitate design review and planning with the Service Delivery Lines including infrastructure based high level/detailed design and operational service level objectives
• Manage performance to ensure that all capabilities delivered align with original business objectives, service levels, IT strategies, and design intent - providing technical oversight to ensure build matches design for infrastructure
• Work with Service Management and Solutions Architecture to create capacity planning standards/processes for all infrastructure components
• Technical partnership and collaboration with development teams
• Have the ability to articulate, both verbally and written, end-to-end technical requirements across Service Delivery functions.
• Evaluate new technology and techniques in order to improve systems infrastructure defining best practices and technology roadmaps.
• Perform Proof of Concept install, test and documentation of new servers, software, and services.
• Drive and lead technical design services, requirements analysis, functional/ technical design leadership, and documentation/review with the business & IT.
• Implement continuous improvement - design, definition of roadmaps, standardization of processes and methodologies
• Must be able to conduct system analysis and translate user requirement into business solutions.
• Provide L3 (advanced) troubleshooting support during and after project roll out.
• Rotational Weekend 24 hours on call support as needed.
• Be on call for 24/7 support for L3 escalations.
• Potentially work seasonal grave/shift hours as necessary.
Required Technical Skills and Experience:
12+ years Systems Engineer experience with ‘mission critical’ systems in a medium to large heterogeneous enterprise environment.
8+ Years Systems Administration experience in UNIX (Linux, Solaris, or HPUX)
5+ Years Systems Administration experience in Windows Server
5+ Years Network Administration experience in Cisco, Foundry or Juniper
3+ Years DataBase Administration experience with MySQL or Oracle (Clustering and/or RAC preferred)
3+ Years Storage Administration experience with multi Terabyte SAN, NAS, DAS storage (NetApp, HDS or EMC)
• Ability to answer Linux/Windows/Network/DataBase/Storage related questions.
• Provide research and development to ensure that the infrastructure is well positioned to support current and emerging distributed physical, virtual and cloud solutions.
• Provide necessary implementation support throughout all phases of the project.
• Proficient in architecting/designing/developing multi-tiered secured solutions for high availability, scalability and of high performance.
• Ability to comprehend and provide advice regarding new hardware and software technical specifications.
• Analytical skills to be used in investigating/troubleshooting system problems/ performance.
• Ability to generate and analyze performance reports/charts.
• Expert level technical knowledge in Linux and Windows Systems Administration.
• Experience with JAVA based application servers i.e. Apache, Tomcat, Jboss or Weblogic.
• Hands-on experience with virtualization with Xen, KVM and/or VMWare technologies.
• Experience supporting Oracle 10g/11g DBAs in Oracle RAC environment.
• Experience supporting MySQL 5 in a Master/Slave or Clustered environment.
• Knowledge of DB backup policy and procedure.
• Ability to scale DataBases both vertically and horizontally.
• Hands-on experience with various SAN technologies that include SAN Fabrics (i.e. Cisco Switches), setting up and creating VSANs, ISLs, and Zoning.
• Creating/managing LUNs/disk groups is essential including multipath Fiber Channel SAN.
• Experience w/ NAS (NFS/CIFS/iSCSI)
• Experience w/ NetBackup and various Tape Libraries.
• Strong TCP/IP and networking knowledge is a must with comprehensive knowledge of: WAN, LAN, routing, switching, NAT, VPN, DHCP, DNS
• Setting up VLANs, VLAN trunking/802.1q tagging.
• Knowledge of Load Balancing (Cisco and Netscaler primarily.)
• Working knowledge of CDN (Akamai and/or LimeLight.)
